What to Write in a Wedding Card

Have you ever wondered, what to write in a wedding card? If so, you're not alone. Standing in a card shop with a beautiful wedding card in your hands and absolutely no idea what to write inside is more common than people admit. We hear it all the time in our boutique.

After years of working with couples across Canterbury and Kent, we know that wedding cards are often kept, reread and treasured long after the day itself. That’s why what you write matters, it needs to be perfect, poetic and to be meaningful.

Here’s our honest advice on what to write in a wedding card, whether you’re close family, a friend, or a guest who simply wants to get it right.

When thinking of what to write in a wedding card, start with a genuine congratulations

Thinking of what to write in a wedding card can be tricky, but at its heart, a wedding card is about acknowledging the couple and their commitment to each other. A simple, sincere congratulations is always the right place to start.

You don’t need to overthink this. A warm line wishing them happiness together immediately sets the tone and never feels out of place. What matters most is that it sounds like you, not something copied word-for-word from the card itself.

Tailor your message to your relationship

One of the biggest mistakes we see is trying to write the “perfect” message instead of the right one. What you write should reflect how well you know the couple. Maybe write about how you met or add a story about your own friendship that sees them on their journey.

If you’re close family or a long-time friend, it’s absolutely appropriate to be personal. Mentioning shared memories, how proud you are, or how happy you are to see them married adds real meaning. If you’re a colleague or more distant guest, a shorter, heartfelt message is just as lovely and often more appropriate.

There’s no requirement to bare your soul warmth and sincerity always land better than forced emotion.

What to write in a wedding card if you don’t know them well

This is something we’re asked about often. If you don’t know the couple particularly well, keep your message simple, kind and timeless.

Wishing them happiness, love and a wonderful future together is more than enough. A short, thoughtful message written neatly will always feel respectful.

Adding a personal touch to your wedding card

If you are stuggling with what to write in a wedding card to make it momorable, here is a simple tip. Personal touches are what make wedding cards memorable, but they don’t have to be long. A sentence about how lovely the ceremony was, how happy the couple looked, or how excited you are for their next chapter together can mean a great deal.

If you’re tempted to write a long message, go for it the couple will read these cards in years to come and will love reading all your heart felt messages.

Signing off your wedding card

How you sign the card matters just as much as the message itself. Use the name the couple know you by, and don’t be afraid to include “with love” or “best wishes” if it feels natural.

For family cards, adding your relationship such as “Mum and Dad” or “Auntie Sarah” often makes the card feel even more special when it’s looked back on later.

Our advice from Amore Brides Canterbury

As a bridal boutique based in Canterbury, we’re privileged to be part of so many wedding journeys across Kent and London. We see how much love, effort and emotion goes into every wedding day, and wedding cards are a small but meaningful part of that story.

Our best advice is simple:

Write your wedding card with kindness, be yourself, and remember the couple will treasure the thought far more than the wording.

If your message comes from a genuine place, it will always be the right one.

Knowing what to write in a wedding card doesn’t need to be stressful. Whether your message is short and simple or deeply personal, what matters is that it reflects your good wishes for the couple and their future together.

At Amore Brides Canterbury, weddings are at the heart of everything we do. Supporting couples across Canterbury and Kent, we understand how important the little details are and the words written in a wedding card are often remembered long after the day itself.
